SVMA Newsletter  – February 2024

Welcome to the second edition of the SVMA monthly newsletter.  The goal of the newsletter is to inform SVMA members and regional manufacturers about upcoming opportunities for your engagement with schools in our region, advance the workforce development training of your employees through apprenticeships, and build a robust community of manufacturers through continuous engagement.

Administrative Updates
  • The SVMA website has been updated to include the logos and company descriptions for each of the SVMA members. Thanks to everyone who responded to my request.

Education Committee Updates
  • Folsom Lake College (FLC) is in search of instructors for the new Manufacturing Industrial Technology Program (Mi Tech). If you know of someone interested in giving back and inspiring the next generation of manufacturing excellence, please reach out to Greg McCormac, Dean of Education at FLC.
  • SVMA has partnered with the Los Rios Community College District to promote workbased learning opportunities for community college students. Eligible students can participate for up to 2 semesters. Private sector employers are reimbursed for 50% of the wages paid.  For more information about LAEP:  LAEP BROCHURE
  • Are you a manufacturer located in El Dorado County interested in hosting a high school intern during the school year or summer? Please contact  Chris Woolever.  Chris is an instructor at Ponderosa HS and is implementiing the internship program.
  • On February 21, 20 students from the Burbank HS Construction Technology program toured Weidner Architectural Signage, located in South Sacramento. Weidner started over 60 years ago as a sign painting business.  Today it provides an array of services to their clients including design, 3D simulation, laser cutting, welding & fabrication, CNC production, and installation of the finished product.  All of which is done in house.
  • On March 6 the John F Kennedy Zero Emission Vehicle Program will tour Siemens Mobility.
  • On March 7 the El Dorado Union High School District is hosting a Career Fair at Union Mine HS from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Register to participate:  HERE!
  • On March 14 Lincoln HS Career Fair (Placer Co) will host a career fair. Register Here:  2024 WPUSD Career Fairs.
  • On March 21 Twin Bridges High School (Placer Co) will host their career fair. Register Here:  2024 WPUSD Career Fairs.
  • On March 28 Sierra College Open House for Manufacturers. This will include tours of the advanced manufacturing, welding and mechatronics programs as well as a Q & A.    Sierra College is committed to building stronger employer relations.  This is your opportunity to recruit your future workforce.    REGISTER HERE!
  • Speaking of Sierra College, the Advanced Manufacturing Program is offering the following classes during the second half of the semester (April 8 to May 31). Classes are asynchronous meaning that classroom homework can be done at home while labs are held on campus.  Please encourage your employers to register now as these classes are popular and fill up quickly.
  • ADVM 0063 – Design 2-D Mfg of 3-D Objects (CRN 42323, 41203), o ADVM 0066 – CNC Machining Level 1 (CRN 41205, 41206), and  o ADVM 0067 – CNC Machining Level 2 (CRN 41204)

  • On April 17 the Elk Grove Unified School District will host their Spring Career Fair at Valley HS. REGISTER HERE, if you want to participate as an employer.
  • On April 18 the Sacramento City College Mechanical Electrical Technology and Industrial Automation Programs will host their Spring Open House & Career Fair. This career fair will include representatives from the MET/IMMT, engineering & engineering design technology programs.   SCC enrollment has rebounded from Covid, and they expect over 200 students and at least 20 employers to participate. Contact Marina Kovalenko to register your company’s attendance.
  • On April 25 the American River College Electronics Dept is hosting their Spring Career Fair.  Register Here!
  • Last, Sierra College is interested if the region’s manufacturers are interested in sending their employees to summer classes. These are typically 8 weeks in length.  If you are interested, would you please complete the Survey Form by March 14.
  • If you hear about schools and school districts hosting advisories, etc, please let me know. We want to place these on the SVMA calendar and recruit manufacturers to participate.

 Workforce Committee Updates
  • The SVMA Apprenticeship Committee hosted on-boarding event for manufacturers and apprentices at Folsom Lake College on Feb 6, 2024. We have 3 apprentices starting this Spring. Registration for this cohort closes on March 5.  Another enrollment period begins in June.

  • Update on QC Technician Apprenticeship Program. The QC Apprenticeship Advisory Committee will meet on 3/12/2024 to review the draft standards with the Department of Apprenticeship Standards.  The apprenticeship program will be approved by 6/30/2024.  The SVMA apprenticeship committee will be focused on recruiting apprentices into the program effective October 2024.  This will enable apprentices to plan their class enrollment for the Spring 2025 semester.  Stay tuned in August 2024 for more information about the apprenticeship onboarding process.
  • SVMA is working with the National Institute of Metalworking Standards (NIMS) to incorporate their Smart Training Solutions (STS) into the on-the-job training (OJT) program which every manufacturer provides for their employees. If you are interested in learning more about STS and how it can enhance your company’s training please contact Mike Bell or John Grover.
  • SVMA Workforce Development & Education Committees host the “Spring 2024 High School Manufacturing Challenge.” May 8.  Watch for emails from SVMA members Mike Bell & Jeff Briggswith more details.   Thanks to our event sponsors for their prize donations:  Five Star Bank, Bender Insurance Services, Schilling Robotics and Snowline Engineering.   There will be opportunities for members to serve as mentors, judges, and provide in-kind donations.

  • 4/2 SVMA is partnering with the State Employment Training Panel and Siera Consulting to host a webinar about utilizing the Employment Training Panel (ET) funding to upskill your workforce.

 Charles A Jones Manufacturing Training Center Partnership
  • SVMA and CAJ are actively recruiting Rancho Cordova & Elk Grove residents into manufacturing training and career pathways, thanks to workforce development grants from the Cities. These grants expire at the end of 2024, or until funds are depleted.
  • CAJ is hosting the Spring Advisory Meeting on March 12 from 5 – 7 pm. Please let Todd Frazee know if you will be attending.
  • CAJ Latest & Future Graduates.
  • 3 students graduate in January 2024. Please let me or Todd Frazee know if you would like to interview these graduates.

  • Next cohort for the 9-month Manufacturing Technician begins April 2, 2024.
