What A Year!

November 11, 2018 by Clare Price

SVMI was launched October 31, 2017 at a meeting of manufacturers at the Sutter Club. From that meeting, a vision was born to build the manufacturing community by working with educators and industry partners to proactively develop vocational, educational and workforce initiatives and programs leading to fulfilling manufacturing career paths for our region’s students and workforce.

Over the past 12 months (actually 9 months) SVMI has been busy!

Business owners have rekindled and/or developed relationships with other local manufacturers through ‘Business to Business’ activities. Working together on SVMI sponsored projects, 40+ manufacturers have been touched.

Student Outreach Exceeds 450

By Steve Dicus
SMVI has touched 450 students with a range of activities including:

  • Engaging local educational decision makers and administrators – with presentations about the value of manufacturing to the local economy and the need we have for them to provide a qualified and trained workforce. 30+ people were involved.
  • Training provided to classroom instructors, which has supported the school’s manufacturing programs by increased participation on advisory boards, assistance with curriculum development, letters of support for school facility improvement grant funding: 14 instructors benefited.

The rising generation of students have witnessed what the 21st century manufacturing facility and associated careers currently are, by hearing classroom presentations from local manufacturers, participation in career fairs, and walking on the shop floor with a knowledgeable manufacturing expert as their guide.

Siemens Student Outreach

By Kevin McGrew
Siemens employees visited local high schools to talk about careers in manufacturing as part of Sacramento Manufacturing Month. We brought a team of some of our younger manufacturing experts to present what they did and how they got to where they are.

We were at Laguna Creek High School Career Technical Education classroom on Wednesday, October 17, 2018. On Thursday we were in Florin High School with Michael Rosales Engineering classroom. Both Rob Haworth, LCHS Instructor, and Michael Rosales, FHS Instructor, participated in the “Train the Trainer” program last summer at Siemens where they received updated training on career skills in areas like computer modeling and welding.

Bill Giovannetti, Elk Grove USD College and Career Connections coordinator, was present at LCHS event and said, “It is great to have Siemens experts demonstrate the broad array of skills necessary to build high tech equipment like their trains.”

Rob Haworth said “It is very helpful for our students to see that not everyone has a complete career plan coming out of high school. Many roads lead to manufacturing.”

Manufacturing Month Sparks Community Support

During the October manufacturing month celebration nine local communities and their civic leaders endorsed proclamations that both support and recognize the value that local manufacturing businesses bring to their communities. Here, the City of Rancho Cordova presents its proclamation to Joe Wernette, CEO of Tri Tool.

CERATIZIT Tour Showcases Regional Manufacturing Strength

By Tim Schaefer
The October 5th Manufacturing Day tour at CERATIZIT Sacramento was a huge success. The tour began with greeting our guests in our conference room for Introductions and a presentation of CERATIZIT’s Manufacturing operations as well as CERATIZIT’s roll supporting area Manufacturers. CERATIZIT’s products touch almost every manufacturing operation in the United States and the world.

Most people on the tour had no idea what an End Mill is. If you think about it our products are used in almost every manufacturing operation, here are a few examples; automotive, computer, eye glasses, medical implants, ocean exploration, power generation, space exploration and even zoological enclosures.

At the conclusion of the tour we discussed legislative impacts on manufacturing and the important consideration to allocation of resources to keeping the manufacturing economy humming along.

CERATIZIT Sacramento thanks all of the public officials who toured our facility:

Annaly Mendoza (for Senator Harris)
Congressman Ami Bera
Sergio Robles (Bera Staff)
Matthew Ceccato (Bera Staff)
Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli
Rancho Cordova Council Members, McGarvey, Terry and Gatewood
Rancho Cordova City Manager Cyrus Abhar
Economic Development Dept, Director Curt Haven, Amanda Norton and Meghan Huber
Citrus Heights Mayor Steve Miller

SVMI at the Manufacturers Advisory Forum

SVMI VP Joe Wernette, CEO of Tri Tool, represented SVMI at Congressman Garamendi’s Manufacturing day advisory forum where he was able to share SVMI’s outreach to schools, educators and local officials.

SVMI Rocklin High School Outreach

Michelle Stofan, vice president of Garner Products spoke to Rocklin High School students during the Manufacturing Week student outreach. “I had a great group of students that were very interested in what I had to say. I brought my PD-5 and SSD-1 physical destroyers to show them. The minute it went on the table, I had students asking me questions and fully
engaged. My 10-minute presentation turned into 45 minutes of questions,
stories and them showing us their projects,” Michelle said about the student enthusiasm she experienced.

Sacramento Recognizes Manufacturing Month

On October 16th, the Mayor and City Council of the City of Sacramento recognized October 2018 as Manufacturing Awareness and Appreciation Month. The resolution presented to SVMI president Kevin McGrew among others noted the importance of “increasing the exposure of manufacturing careers within our local area to our students, educators, media and politicians to bridge the gap in skilled labor shortage and create viable career pathways for students and adults.”

Manufacturing Future Careers

October 16, 2018 by Clare Price

Manufacturing future careers for Elk Grove Unified School District students through the Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Initiative (SVMI)

POSTED ON OCTOBER 15, 2018

Last spring, several staff members from the Elk Grove Unified School District attended a kick-off meeting hosted by Siemens together with several locally based Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). The group included CEOs, VPs, teachers, public school administrators, human resource representatives and higher education institutions. The staff from the Siemens North American passenger light rail manufacturing facility led a tour of their more than 583,000 square foot facility where they employ more than 1,000 people all working to build a full range of rail vehicles. After the tour, the group of local leaders discussed the OEM industry, the skilled workforce needs of those manufacturers and the job, career and educational opportunities for local area graduates.

The OEM industry, similar to the building industry, offers many career avenues for students who graduate from high school. Often, instead of choosing to go directly to college, graduates seek to gain hands-on experience in a trade, earn a steady income and eventually become professional tradesmen and women with opportunities to go on to college and into management. During the tour of each station, manufacturing area leads spoke to the tour group to tell their story of how they went from high school and into a community college, a trade school or the military to earn a special manufacturing skill certification and that since joining Siemens, they’ve advanced their skills, pay and experience working for an international company. At the conclusion of the half-day event, it became clear to the tour group that several of the skills sought, like welding and engineering, are easily transferable from one industry to another.

Two Elk Grove Unified Career Technical Education teachers took advantage of training offered by industry experts from the OEM group where they learned more about CAD programs and advanced welding. Since last spring, discussions have continued between EGUSD and SVMI to build awareness about the many opportunities in manufacturing for EGUSD graduates. This fall, as high school students gear up to make important decisions regarding their future careers, participation in career fairs and activities can be life-altering given the many opportunities to network. SVMI is dedicated to helping students across the valley gain exposure to 21st century manufacturing careers and the month of October will be packed with events featuring SVMI and their partners to give students an idea of the opportunities and rewarding careers available in the manufacturing business.

SVMI is focused on making a positive impact on the lives of young people by educating students and the community in jobs involving mechanical and manufacturing engineers, machinist, quality technician, maintenance mechanic, customer service / sales, post production technicians and more. SVMI’s goal is to ensure that the Sacramento area is viewed as a competitive manufacturing region with plenty of skilled workers to fill job openings. SVMI is participating in many informational activities that will wrap up with a tour of Pacific Coast Producers in Woodland on October 19, 2018.

  • Other events featuring SVMI included:
  • Making your Mark Award Ceremony on Oct. 5
  • Ceronix of Auburn tour on Oct.5
  • Ceratizit of Rancho Cordova Tour on Oct 5.
  • Rocklin Mini Maker Faire at Sierra College on Oct. 6
  • Valley High School Career Fair at Siemens on Oct. 10
  • Siemens tour on Oct. 11
  • High school student presentations by Tri Tool, Stewart Tools, Garner Products, Harris & Bruno, Siemens and JL Haley during the month of October.

The Elk Grove Unified School District enthusiastically welcomed SVMI and their partners to attend the district’s many career fairs. Siemens and SVMI partners recently presented at the Valley High School Career Fair on October 10th and look forward to participating in Laguna Creek High School’s Career Fair on October 17th as well as the upcoming Florin High School Career Fair on October 18th & 19th. The combined outreach and awareness efforts between EGUSD, the 5th largest school district in California and Siemens, one of the largest manufacturing conglomerates in the world, specializing in industry, energy, healthcare, and infrastructure, promises to continue delivering high quality instruction for EGUSD students, which will prepare them to become high performing people who find high performance solutions.
